Session Review

A limit built from your own worst night, not a rule of thumb

Generic advice says keep twenty times your bet, or fifty, or a hundred. Those numbers come from nowhere in particular. You have something better: a record of what your sessions actually cost. This page sets a limit against that, and shows what it would have changed if you had been keeping it all along.

A limit you set while losing is not a limit. It is a negotiation.

What a limit does

And the three things it does not

It caps the tail. Most of the damage in a gambling history sits in a small number of very bad sessions. A limit does not touch the ordinary ones and truncates the rare disasters, which is where the money actually goes.

What it does not do

  • It does not improve your expected value. Every spin you do play still costs bet times house edge. Stopping earlier reduces total cost only because you played less, which is the entire mechanism and it is not a trick.
  • It does not make you due for anything. Sessions are independent. Stopping at a loss does not bank anything toward a future win, and neither does continuing.
  • It does not work if it is set during the session. A limit decided while losing is decided by the part of you that is losing. The number has to exist before the first spin, which is the only reason writing it down matters.

A defensible way to pick one

Take your expected cost per hour from the forward calculation, multiply by how long you actually intend to play, and use that. It is a number with a reason behind it rather than a feeling, and unlike your worst historical session it does not quietly ratchet upward every time you have a bad night.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I set a loss limit for slots?

Two defensible methods. Take your expected cost per hour, from bet size times house edge times spin rate, and multiply by the hours you intend to play. Or take the distribution of your own past sessions and pick a figure that would have truncated only the worst of them. The second uses real data about you, the first works before you have any.

Does a stop loss improve my chances?

No. It does not change the expected cost of any spin you actually play. What it does is cap the worst outcome and take the decision away from the moment you are least equipped to make it. That is worth doing on its own terms, and it is not an edge.

Should I set a win limit too?

A win limit does not protect anything mathematically, because a positive balance carries no more obligation to be lost than any other balance. What it does is convert a paper win into a real one by ending the session, which matters because continuing to play returns the balance to a game with a negative expectation. It is a behavioural tool, like the loss limit, and it should be described that way rather than as strategy.
